We have been busy for the past months working together with heimat and the BVR. Following the campaign concept of “was uns antreibt” (what is your motivation). We created a youtube competition asking the German public what it is that motivates them. The price for the winner would be that the BVR makes that dream/motivation come true.

The results on the youtube channel were great almost half a million views.

The winner of the competition was Marco Weissenberg. His dream? He wants to be a magician. So while he has been working hard on his tricks, we have been working hard on his website. It was a very nice project to do as there was some filming involved and it took us away from our computers for a couple of days.

You can see the site here. Hopefully Marco will succeed and he will be the next David Blaine!

Hope you like it!

Last time i visited my parents i got a letter from the mayor of Linz. Soon there are elections, so i thought it will be just normal advertising for the SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria).

But what i found was quite clever. There have been 6 proposals for posters with quotes from famous people. So the mayor asks the poeple of Linz to decide which poster they want to see in the streets of Linz.
You can pick your favourite one and send the letter back or can also choose one via internet.

Its a clever idea, you incorporate people/ electors from the beginning and they feel part of the campaign every time they see “their” poster in the streets.

During the ars electronica festival this year we also saw the exhibition IMPETUS of the MIT Media Lab. There have been really interesting projects, here are some….

—————-

Social Garden

Technology has allowed people to develop larger social networks than previously done. But as a result, we have more relationships than we can manage. Social Gardening explores using plants as metaphor for relationships, hoping to encourage us to tend our social connections like we do our garden. By tracking and analyzing communications through email, instant messaging, social websites, SMS, and phone, Social Gardening proposes to give feedback on how our relationships are flourishing or wilting. It may also provide a practical interface to browse and manage conversations and contacts.

—————-

Drawdio: Turn Almost Anything into a “Theremin”

Imagine you could draw musical instruments on normal paper with any pencil (cheap circuit thumb-tacked on) and then play them with your finger. The Drawdio circuit-craft lets you MacGuyver your everyday objects into musical instruments: paintbrushes, macaroni, trees, grandpa, even the kitchen sink…

—————-

Hyperinstruments

is devoted to musical expression for everyone, from high level virtuosi to the general public, to children and families, and to promote health and wellness.

There are over 20 projects related to this theme, here one example:
Toy Symphony alter how children are introduced to music.

—————-

Sourcemap

We believe that people have the right to know where things come from and what they are made of. Sourcemap is a platform for researching, optimizing and sharing the supply chains behind a number of everyday products.

Introduction to Sourcemap from Matthew Hockenberry on Vimeo.

—————-

Cherry Blossoms

Cherry Blossoms gives witness to the tragedy of war. The project starts in a backpack outfitted with a small microcontroller and a GPS unit. Recent news of bombings in Iraq are downloaded to the unit every night, and their relative location, to the center of the city, are superimposed onto a map of Boston. If the wearer walks into a space in Boston that correlates to a site of violence in Baghdad, the backpack detonates. A compressed cloud of confetti engulfs the scene, looking like a mixture between smoke, shrapnel and the white blossoms of a cherry tree. Each piece of confetti is inscribed with the name of a civilian who died in the war, and the circumstances of their death. With Cherry Blossoms human loss resonates beyond the boundary of conflict.

—————-

If you are interested in all the other projects from IMPETUS, which are not mentioned here, follow this link.

Another time we went to see the Ars electronica Festival , which always takes place in Linz – which is by the way the European Capital of Culture this year!

Like always, the golden Nica and awards of distinction are given to projects in the sections digital music / hybrid art/ interactive art / digital communities / computer animation-film-vfx. Some projects this year have been better than others. Here the ones which impressed me most.

————- interactive art————-

default to public by Jens Wunderling is a project dealing with the discrepancy between people’s feeling of privacy on the web and the physical world. It consists of an ongoing series of objects and interventions linking the physical world to the online world in unexpected and narrative ways to create awareness for self-exposure. Information from the twitter network are displayed in another public environment.

Status Panel: Using your Twitter-Status for your doorbell

or Tweetscreen: Projecting tweets, which have been written near its own physical location on a large projection screen

————- digital communities————-

WikiLeaks is a website that publishes anonymous submissions and leaks of sensitive governmental, corporate, or religious documents, while attempting to preserve the anonymity and untraceability of its contributors.

See here the talk of Julian Assange at Ars Electronica on the value of journalism and WikiLeaks to the world.

————- digital music ————-

A funny concert we saw was NABAZ’MOB by Antoine Schmitt and Jean-Jacques Birgé.

“NABAZ’MOB” is an opera composed especially for 100 nabaztags, these are bunny featuring a WLAN internet connection which can communicate via voice, light signals and wiggling its ears. Its subject matter is the growing importance of teamwork, decision-making and control—and, simultaneously, the problems increasingly associated with them—in our ever-more-complex world.

————- hybrid art ————-

The New York Times Special Edition by Steve Lambert member of Because We Want It.

One week after Barack Obama was elected president of the United States, there appeared a perfectly counterfeited special edition of the New York Times reporting the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And that’s not all. The whole issue was devoted exclusively to good news, the kind of stories people would like to read on a daily basis. This paper, dated 9 months in the future, stands for the vision of a more righteous world.

————- animation ————-

Boris by Daniel Lundquist is an amazing animation film – the style, the story and the transitions between the images are very impressive.
